How I get it done… Diana Foltz

We are asking local business leaders how they accomplish goals and run their businesses. We spoke to Diana Foltz, the Designated Managing Broker with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group in Champaign.

What is a typical morning like?
One of the things I love about my profession is that every day is different. My goal is to start with the same morning routine of prayer, affirmations and writing personal notes before the chaos of the day begins. I have the joy and challenge of being self employed as a Realtor and also run my offices as the Designated Managing Broker. Often my mornings consist of answering questions from clients or agents prior to meetings and appointments.

How do you keep the pressures of running a business from getting to you?
Our brains cannot feel anxiety and gratitude at the same time, so when stress comes I acknowledge all that I have to be thankful for. I also like to meditate and exercise to refocus. My support circle is amazing too.

What keeps you motivated?
What keeps me motivated on the Realtor side is that I get to help my clients move on to the next chapter of their lives. On the Designated Manager side, I get to help my agents set goals and then train and guide them towards those goals. That looks different for each client and agent. Getting to be a part of that success is fulfilling.

How do you make tough decisions?
When I have a decision to make I first look at the facts. If a win-win outcome is possible, that’s the best. If not, then I consider how people will be affected by the options. I’m always honest with all parties even if it’s not something they want to hear.

How do you unwind?
I like to unwind by reading books, going for walks/hikes, having game nights and snuggling with my pups.

What are you like as a boss?
As a boss, I like to make sure my staff understands their tasks and let them tell me if there is a better way. If there are issues, I like to look to see if it was just a mistake or if there is a system or process that needs to be changed. Studies show we are an average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. I make sure the people I surround myself with are the best and that helps.

How do you set long-term and short-term goals for your business?
When setting goals, I like to have a long-term plan but then focus on the tasks that will accomplish them. If we break down the long-term goal into more achievable tasks and stay on track then the long-term goal will take care of itself.

What is your philosophy on customer service and the importance of it?
With customer service, I believe in asking a lot of questions to completely understand the client’s perspective and then working to find a resolution. Often people just want to know that someone cares enough to listen. If an issue is the fault of one of my staff or agents then I explain the plan of correcting that issue and then follow up after it’s been addressed as well.
