Seven fire departments responded to a house fire in St. Joseph on Wednesday.
The fire, located at 101 W. Douglas, was called in at 9:20 a.m, said St. Joseph-Stanton Fire Chief Josh Reese.
All occupants of the home escaped.
Reese said originally St. Joseph Stanton, Ogden, Homer, and Sidney Fire Departments responded to the fire. A second alarm was requested and Gifford and Edge Scott responded. Later, Eastern Prairie and Savoy also were requested.
“All because of the hot humid weather and the need to rotate crews to come out and cool down and get water,” Reese said. “Heat took a toll on the guys and we had Arrow Ambulance keeping the firefighters hydrated.”
Reese said the cause of the fire was a candle left burning on an outdoor patio box overnight.
