St. Joseph to participate in county electronics recycling event

The Village of St. Joseph will be taking part in the Champaign County Electronic Recycling Event.

The event will be held May 18 at Parkland College, located at 2400 W. Bradley Ave, Champaign.

Residents must use the Duncan Road entrance then follow the signs.

Residents can register for the event starting on April 8 at 8 a.m.

Last year, the village opted to hold their own electronics recycling event.

That cost the village $31,508 with the township paying and additionl $4,000. The village is paying the county $565.40 so village residents can participate in the May and October events.

Mayor Tami Fruhling-Voges said the county event was more than sufficient for resident and was ran in an orderly manner. Plus. she did not believe the cost of having a village only event could be justified.

The electronics recycling event will accept up to four TVs per person, computers, computer monitors, printers, typewriters, electronic keyboards, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, portable digital music players, video game consoles, electronic mice, scanners, digital converter boxes, cable receivers, satellite receivers, small scale servers, accessory computer speakers, ink and toner cartridges, loose wires, holiday string lights, all phones and phone accessories, digital cameras, uninterrupted power supplies and networking equipment.

The following items will not be accepted:  liquid-containing items, freon-containing items, refrigerators, freezers, small appliances, lamps, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, stereo speakers, cash registers, thermostats, light bulbs, rechargeable and alkaline batteries, digital projectors, credit card readers, telecom equipment, external drives, circuit boards, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Once residents register for the event they will receive a confirmation email.  If they do not receive a confirmation email and or text, then they might not have registered completely.

Two weeks before the event residents will receive a postcard in the mail. The postcard serves as a ticket to the event or the confirmation email can be used as a ticket to the event.
