Kern, Atwood help SJO golf pick up two wins

Jacob Kern is continuing to lead the way for the St. Joseph-Ogden High School golf team. Kern and teammate McGwire Atwood earned co-medalist honors during a triangular involving SJO, Fisher and Hoopeston Area last Thursday at Willow Pond Golf Course in Rantoul.

Kern and Atwood each carded a 43 for SJO, which compiled a 178 team total, well ahead of the 217 shot by Fisher and the 222 shot by Hoopeston Area. Maddux Carter and Logan Smith each contributed to the solid round by the Spartans by each shooting a 46.

Prior to last Thursday, the Spartans played and won a weather-shortened triangular last Wednesday at Danville Country Club. The Spartans compiled a score of 129 against Schlarman’s 139 and Salt Fork’s 141, with only six of the nine holes able to finish before poor weather ended the event.

Kern shot a 30 to finish with co-medalist honors, while Carter (32), Atwood (33) and Smith (34) weren’t far behind.

SJO is set to get back in action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin at Willow Pond before heading to Willow Pond again on Thursday for an Illini Prairie Conference dual with Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda that’s set to begin at 4:30 p.m. The two nine-hole events on Tuesday and Thursday are a precursor to SJO taking part in the Viking Invitational hosted by Danville that will tee off at 1 p.m. Friday at Turtle Run Golf Club in Danville.
