Kern leads SJO golf during first week of season

The first week of the season saw the St. Joseph-Ogden High School golf team play in its first tournament and pick up its first win.

The Spartans defeated Oakwood 193-212 in a dual match at Harrison Park Golf Course on Aug. 18. This came after SJO placed 12th at the 15-team Tiger Kick-Off Classic at Urbana Country Club on Aug. 16.
Jacob Kern shined for SJO in both events, earning medalist honors against Oakwood with a 44 and carding the best round for the Spartans in Urbana with an 87.

McGwire Atwood shot a 48 and Jack Robertson chipped in with a 49 to complement Kern’s round against Oakwood. Logan Smith rounded out the SJO total with a 52.

Along with Kern’s 87 in Urbana, Maddux Carter and Atwood each shot a 101 at the 18-hole tournament, with Smith adding a 107.

The Spartans are set to get back on the course at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Schlarman in a dual match at Danville Country Club.
