Mayor Tami Fruhling-Voges wants to assure residents of St. Joseph that a protest planned for today at 5 p.m. will be peaceful.
“The village will always honor those who have the right to gather and peacefully express their freedom of speech,” Fruhling-Voges said.
Fruhling-Voges said the protest Jon Arteaga held on Wednesday was peaceful and was held on a public right of way.
Fruhling-Voges met with Arteaga on Thursday.
“He has assured me that through his planning that the protest will be nothing but peaceful,” she said. “Mr. Arteaga explained that the protest will not be a moving protest, will not be blocking the roadways or interfering with any of the village’s businesses. Through his planning it appears that he has things well thought out.”
Fruhling-Voges stressed that Arteaga grew up in St. Joseph and knows the community.
“He understands the values of living in a peaceful community,” she said. “I expect both the protesters and the rest of the community to be respectful and kind.”
