January 14, 2026 Local Stories in and Around St. Joseph, Illinois

Live at Ogden Village Board, Sept. 5, 2024

I am here so you don’t have to be. It’s a jammed packed house.

Maybe for the zoning? They are discussing changing the roadway requirements to amend mobile home requirements. Basically, they are discussing easements.

They are discussing changes for zoning on rear and side yards.

John Wright saying a four foot porch as a maximum in the front seems small. Don Wauthier, my favorite engineer, saying that’s not the size of the porch but how far it can encroach into the setback.

No public comment.

Skipping item seven and eight, which is a board member resigning and appointing a new one. Ben Smith is resigning.

They are giving an award to Ted Hartke for his recent revitalization of two buildings downtown. He donated his own time and money to clean up the right of way near the rail to trails path. Ted saying Ogden is a great town and he loves having his business here. When you go by somewhere and see something out of place you can do something about it, Hartke said. Ogden has been nothing but good to me.

Acklin saying Ted is a “doer” “He sees a situation and tries to make it better. If we could have more Ted Hartke’s that would be a wonderful thing.”

Regular public comment time. Steve Guess is speaking. Asking where the new ordinances are posted for public viewing. Noticed website is not up to date. FOIA’d all of minutes and agendas. He is concerned that the website is not going to be updated.

He is bringing up issues with the library not receiving tax dollars in a timely manner. It seems to be a clerical error. Singing the praises of the library. It is a great library but these issues have been addressed already so I am not sure why they are being brought up again.

In the defense of the village, unless there is a full time, dedicated employee to the website it doesn’t have to be updated in a timely manner. And he probably didn’t have to FOIA the minutes. You can walk in and just ask for the binder. The open meetings act says: Public notice of all meetings, whether open or closed to the public, shall be given as
follows:
(a) Every public body shall give public notice of the schedule of regular meetings
at the beginning of each calendar or fiscal year and shall state the regular
dates, times, and places of such meetings. An agenda for each regular
meeting shall be posted at the principal office of the public body and at the
location where the meeting is to be held at least 48 hours in advance of the
holding of the meeting. A public body that has a website that the full-time staff
of the public body maintains shall also post on its website the agenda of any
regular meetings of the governing body of that public body

Onward Ogden asking the village to pay the bill for the Christmas Lights power. They agreed.

No more public comment.

Discussing sidewalks. The engineering fees are more than $14,000. “I am going to have a hard time approving that much money for a sidewalk,” Acklin said.

Don saying the fees are based on the idea that they would have to replace the sidewalk and it would involve some drainage work.

Discussing the audit report. Audit approved.

A and R quote to replace sewer lift station. It’s about $35,000. Approved.

Ben Smith resigned. His letter said he left due to personal family matters and he no longer resides within Ogden. Resignation accepted.

Now they are going to discuss who to appoint. The mayor gets to appoint and the board approves. Wade Stine was appointed by Acklin, the board approved.

They are discussing Broadway Storm water pump station improvements.
The board is hesitant to do the project due to the cost. They are tabling it right now.

Discussing the website at this time. Jim Haan is here to explain how the website he designed works. They are going to continue it. But just a reminder, they are within the letter of the law, since they do not have a full time staff member at the village.

Pest control time. They get spiders and silver fish at the village hall. #creepycrawlies I feel like silver fish have been really, really heavy this year.

The waste water treatment plant refurbishing project payment approved. It’s about $82,000. Punch list items are all that’s left.

Health and safety-camping trailers have been moved out of the yard of a local house.

Events: Acklin praising the festival. “It went off very well. It was hot but it was well attended. I had multiple, multiple folks tell me how much they appreciated Ogden hosting that.” The car show included 200 cars.

Harvest Festival will be October 26 1 to 3 p.m.

Dumpster Day is Sept. 28. Six Dumpsters are coming to the park. No hazardous waste, no tires, ect. No electronics, no chemicals.

Mayor: Grocery sales tax has been eliminated to municipalities. Jan. 2026- the municipality can retain the 1 percent by passing a tax, ect.

American legion wants to transfer legion park to the village.
