The Ribcage in St. Joseph sustained damage on Thursday night when a fire occurred.
St. Joseph-Stanton Assistant Fire Chief Casey Buss said the call was received around 8:30 p.m. that a fire was occurring at the restaurant. By 8:32 p.m. firefighters were on the scene.
Buss said he called in additional units when he saw active flames and upgraded it to a working fire.
Ogden-Royal Fire Protection District, Homer Fire Protection District, A ladder truck from Savoy was called in as a precaution in case fire fighters needed to get on the roof of the restaurant.
“When I initially saw the flames it was on the roof by the chimney of the smoker,” Buss said.
The fire was under control within 15 to 20 minutes Buss said.
“We then had to open up some access points to make sure there was no further extension,” Buss said.
Buss said they believe the cause was some sort of overheating malfunction with the smoker the restaurant uses.
Buss said if the fire had occurred a few hours later, after the restaurant closed, it could have been catastrophic for the downtown area and engulfed more buildings.
Buss said he could not estimate the financial cost of damages at this time.

Ribcage co-owner Anthony Laubscher said he was thankful that no one was injured during the fire and also praised the firefighters that responded to the call.
