Cross Rt. 150 just got a little safer.
The Village of St. Joseph recently installed lighted push-button-activated crosswalk signs near the corner of Rt. 150 and Fifth Street.
The purpose of the signs are to notify drivers that are going east or west on Rt. 150 that there is a person crossing the street when the lighted signs are flashing, said Assistant Public Works Director Luke Fisher.
Fisher said the sign is just one more way for those crossing the street to do it safely.
Earlier this year, a crossing guard and a child were almost hit when a driver drove around the crossing guard. The crossing guard was standing in the middle of Rt. 150 with flags crossing a child.
“We were having many complaints, especially during the times that kids were going to school and getting out of school, that drivers were not stopping for the crossing guard,” Fisher said.
Fisher said pedestrians still need to use caution when crossing Rt. 150.
“Even with the new lighted signs to make sure there is no traffic or traffic has come to a complete stop so that you can cross safely,” he said.
