Burnett, Steinbach keep SJO volleyball rolling

The St. Joseph-Ogden High School volleyball team has established a standard of excellence in the past.

This year is no different.

The Spartans are off to a strong 8-1 start heading into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. home match against nonconference foe Danville and before Thursday’s 7 p.m. Illini Prairie Conference opener at rival St. Thomas More.

SJO continued its superb play with a 25-11, 25-11 home win against Hoopeston Area in nonconference action on Monday night. Kennedi Burnett supplied nine kills, seven digs and three aces, with Becca Steinbach directing the offense to the tune of 19 assists. Hannah Fox (eight digs, three aces) and Shayne Immke (five kills) also chipped in.

The Spartans met little resistance from Oakwood during a Sept. 8 nonconference home match, winning 25-7, 25-6. Addie Roesch led SJO with eight kills, while Burnett had seven kills, 10 digs and four aces. Steinbach (18 assists, six digs) and Fox (10 digs) also contributed.

SJO sustained its first loss on Sept. 7, with Champaign Central prevailing 22-225, 26-24, 25-16 in a nonconference match in St. Joseph. Burnett finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 21 digs to go along with four aces and three assists. Steinbach (29 assists, 11 digs) and Roesch (10 kills, 15 digs) also compiled double-doubles, with Fox adding 10 digs.

The Spartans swept nonconference foe Teutopolis 25-20, 25-10 on Sept. 2 at home. Burnett supplied six kills, six digs and five aces, with Steinbach (12 assists) and Fox (seven digs) also providing sparks.

SJO closed out August with an easy sweep of nonconference opponent Cissna Park at home, defeating the Timberwolves 25-8, 25-16 on Aug. 31. Burnett (10 aces, seven kills, eight digs) and Steinbach (12 assists, six digs) led the way.
