The St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ basketball team already has a tournament championship to its name this season, but the Spartans are still searching for their first home win entering December.
SJO defeated Paxton-Buckley-Loda 45-43 in overtime of the championship game at the Falcon/Bunnie Tip-Off Classic in Fisher on Nov. 22, but couldn’t keep its perfect start intact following a 66-45 nonconference loss to Paris on Nov. 26 in the Spartans’ home opener.
Balanced scoring carried SJO (4-1) to its win against PBL in a close game throughout as five Spartans scored at least five points.
Senior guard Katie Cramer led the way with a team-high nine points, while sophomore guard Alyssa Hamilton added eight points. Sophomore guard Payton Jacob (seven points), sophomore guard Ashlyn Lannert (six points), senior forward Taylor Barnes (six points) and sophomore forward Taylor Wells (five points) all made critical baskets for SJO.
Turnovers plagued the Spartans in their loss to Paris, which saw SJO trail 16-5 at the end of the first quarter, 31-16 at halftime and 51-31 to start the third quarter.
Barnes paced SJO with nine points against Paris, while the trio of Lannert, Jacob and Hamilton all finished with six points apiece.
The Spartans return to the court with a home game on Monday night, the first of three nonconference games this week. SJO hosts Tuscola at 7:30 p.m. on Monday before playing at Danville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and playing at Oakwood at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
